Chapter Twenty-Nine
“He’s late again,” Mr. Speight said flatly.
“Yes, sir, he’s late, but it’s my fault. I’m his uncle, Kwame Duhart-Raines, and it was my responsibility to have him here at three o’clock on the dot for his mother. I messed up and I’m sorry. I just moved back to Macon from Miami, and I got my streets mixed up.” I extended my hand across his desk.
The slender white dude with a long ponytail like Pocahontas gripped my hand in a firm shake. He looked familiar to me like I had been in his presence before. The way he was studying my face, made me believe he thought he knew me as well. Chavion stood in place quietly like he was on his way to the chain gang for life. If he didn’t cease the foolishness he was doing, his ass was going for real.
“Why don’t you both take a seat so we can get started? Kwame should know the routine by now.” Mr. Speight slammed a small plastic cup with a lid on it on his desk. “You have exactly five minutes, young man. The bathroom is in the same place it was the last time you were here. No monkey business.” He placed a label on the outside of the cup and scribbled my nephew’s first initial, last name, and birthdate on it.
Chavion took the cup and left Mr. Speight’s office. I couldn’t help but stare at the older white man while he skimmed through the file on his desk. How do I know you? I was tempted to ask him, but I didn’t think it would be appropriate. More than likely, he was one of Debbie’s old johns. I couldn’t imagine that he would confess to that. He closed the file and looked up at me.
“I assume you’re Ms. Duhart’s brother.”
“Yes, sir, I am. You’ll be seeing me often. Now that I’ve moved back to Macon to attend Mercer, I’ll make sure Chavion reports to you as scheduled whenever my sister asks me to.”

“You should’ve beat his ass, Kwame. Damn them people at the store. His little ass should’ve been ashamed of himself for asking you to buy him malt liquor. His piss test would’ve been dirty if you had been irresponsible enough to buy him that shit. I don’t know what Na-Nay’s gonna do with that boy.”
I cracked up laughing at Nesha. Her face looked so pretty over my iPad screen without an ounce of makeup on. She had flawless skin. “I didn’t wanna risk getting arrested or recorded in the act of violence on somebody’s cell phone. I ain’t about to lose my freedom or scholarships over Chavion’s mess. But I do think we had a breakthrough over dinner. I took him to eat sushi at a popular spot near Mercer. I laid down the law. He knows that his PO and I exchanged phone numbers. I can keep a tighter rein on him than Nay-Nay can. Chavion experienced a side of me that he never knew I had.
